Domain Name registration, Domain ownership issue

After one more issue about domain name registration and ownership of domain name by one of my new clients , I finally decided that I have to put it on my blog. The issue which I am discussing here is about domain name of a website and its ownership rights. One should know the basic facts about ownership of the domain.

But first let me discuss some points in brief, In past single month I came across four different web developer and freelance web designers at Rajkot, Surat , Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar who either refused to transfer the domain or were reluctant to transfer the domain name of their customer to me. The website owner trusted them ( web developers) blindly for so many years and now when they wish to transfer the domain name, suddenly they are getting some unpleasant surprises about domain name ownership issue. Web owners suddendly realised the importance of their domain name.

In one worst case the domain name got expired as the previous web developer didn't even informed about renewal date. This can be termed as height of business / professional negligence and I just don't understand how such survive in the business. In this case I have to help the customer in putting "back order" for domain incase domain cannot be restored. But with little paper work with domain registrar and persistence we completed domain restoration process and finally the web site is now runnning back to normal.

I am not here to say names of these companies and domain name resellers, but I wish to guide the domain name owners about their rights .

Domain Name Registration :

When anyone books a domain name - you need to provide accurate details about the ownership of the domain . Generally you need to provide :
1) company name ( if applicable)
2) Owner's name or registrant name - this is most important detail and should be provided with great care
3) Complete address with pin code and
4) Phone number
5) Accurate / working email address - this is also very important detail . Incase you wish to transfer the domain to other registrar or need any support this email will be of utmost importance.

These details are required while booking a domain name. Ensure that all this details are accurately entered by your web master.

Once you book domain name for your website ask for domain control panel from your web master (if he don't give it) and also check the accuracy of registrant details at websites providing "whois details" , at websmith solution we do provide this facility. Remember its your right to ask for domain control panel.

When you make whois query you will be returned with details like

1) date of domain booking
2) ICANN Accredited registrar
3) Name servers
4) Domain ownership generally shows three details
  1. Registrant Details
  2. Billing Details
  3. Technical Details
Eusure that Registrant details and email at registrant details belongs to you. If not immediately change it by login into your domain control panel.

Inshort, after you book domain name, ask for domain name control panel and also check "whois details" specially registrant details are shows your name /details.
